Best Leif Erikson Day 2022: Wishes, Status, Quotes, Gifts & Sayings

Best Leif Erikson Day Messages: October 9th is National Leif Erikson Day, which celebrates the Nordic explorer who was among the first Europeans to set foot in North America.

Leif Erikson was born around 970 AD and his story starts with him being banished from Iceland for three years because of a murder he committed there. He took off on an expedition with his father’s ship but ended up getting blown off course by strong winds and landed somewhere near Newfoundland, Canada.

He called this place Vinland because of all the grapes they found growing there. They lived here for three years before heading back to Greenland where they had left their other ships behind. However, when they got back home they were told that two more ships had just arrived and they’d had some pretty bad news: their father had died.

History Of National Leif Erikson Day

In 1925, at the Norse-American Centennial celebrations in honor of Leif Erikson’s discovery America was recognized as such by President Calvin Coolidge. Norwegian scholars including Knut Geirset and Ludvig Hektoen worked on this research but were met with little recognition during their lifetimes until recently when it finally made its way back home to Norway where each spent most of his or her life working without pay for Oxford University Press which compiled information from various sources into one manuscript entitled “The Vinland Map”.

In 1963 John Blatnik introduced HJ Resolution 8855 against observing October 9th as an unpaid holiday so both houses voted unanimously agreeing upon April 25 being Dutch settlers day instead (the actual date). This bill passed the Senate but never made it to the House.
