National Hot Buttered Rum Day – January 17, 2022 Activities, History, Celebration

National Hot Buttered Rum Day is an unofficial holiday that takes place annually on January 17th. It was first started in the 1980s by the founder of The Stone Soup Company, who wanted to create a day dedicated to his favorite drink. Though it has no official recognition from any governing body, many companies and organizations take part in celebrating this festive occasion.

History Of National Hot Buttered Rum Day

The origins of National Hot Buttered Rum Day can be found in a story that The Stone Soup Company began telling about its creation. According to the tale, an elderly woman from Maine discovered how delicious hot buttered rum was when she was taking shelter from a blizzard inside her son’s hunting cabin somewhere during colonial times. The next day, she went to the village and began telling others about how great it was, even though she didn’t know exactly what had gone into its creation. Soon enough, word got around that there was some delicious rum drink out in the wilds somewhere, but no one knew where to find it!

Many groups of people tried their hand at recreating this new beverage, but none of them were able to get it just right. That is, until one day when a man named Colonel Jonathan Scoville stumbled upon the recipe by accident while making some other kind of hot drink for his men during an expedition in 1773. After trying this new concoction himself and finding that he loved it, he began telling everyone about it and encouraging them to make it themselves.

Today, this story is still told by The Stone Soup Company to explain the origins of National Hot Buttered Rum Day. It’s a great tale that gives us an excellent reason for why we celebrate on January 17th each year!
