It is celebrated every year on October 16th and marks a day where we honor Major Dhyan Chand who became widely known to be called “The Hockey Wizard” or just “Hockey”. He was born exactly 100 years ago this past Tuesday which makes him an important person not only for hockey but for all sports fans around the world!

It’s also notable because it falls on the same date as India’s National Sports Day which was established in 1978 by’ Rashtra Khel Divas. The following year saw an increase of participation rates across different types of physical activities such as swimming or playing ice hockey for example; just one month after its initial observance occurred on October 16th, 1979.’

National Sports Day has always been observed globally since 2002 when President George W Bush signed legislation designating Oct 10th each year ‘as a national celebration’ dedicated exclusively to promoting healthful living through active lifestyles for all Americans.

The government has leveraged this event since it was first observed in India in, 2012 with many successful projects coming out from these observances such as Narendra Modi’s Khelo India campaign where he announced plans on increasing youth access to sporting activities within schools across all communities by 2022
