Ratification Day is the day when the United States Constitution was ratified. It has been observed on January 14th, 2022 since it went into effect in 1789. The first ratification of the constitution was done by our Founding Fathers and Mothers on September 17, 1787, at Philadelphia’s Independence Hall with 39 out of 41 delegates voting yes to ratify. Ratification Day is celebrated across America each year. We will be looking at how this date came about, what activities people do to celebrate it, and some historic facts about this important event in American history!
History Of Ratification Day
Ratification Day is a day to commemorate the anniversary of when America’s independence was won with help from France. On this date in Annapolis, Maryland at State House officials will be signing the Treaty of Paris which established peace among all parties involved after its ratification by Congress on April 15th, 1781. The Old Senate Chamber has been renovated and preserved just as it was during a treaty-signing ceremony held there less than two years later – November 19th, 1783.
A big part of Ratification Day is to celebrate all that our Founding Fathers did for us. The Founders include not only the president and vice-president but also other key figures such as George Washington, James Madison, John Adams (our second President), Alexander Hamilton (the first United States Secretary of Treasury), Thomas Jefferson (US Ambassador to France), Benjamin Franklin (US Minister to France). And of course, the first president George Washington.
Ratification Day Activities
The first-ever Ratification Day celebration took place on September 17th, 2020. It was a big event that included a parade and music from the time of the ratification to take place at Washington D.C. The idea came about when President Donald Trump proposed it as part of his reelection campaign for 2022. He felt after three decades since the last major federal holiday, it was time to celebrate the ratification of our founding document.
