WHEN IS WORLD HUMANITARIAN DAY 2022?

Relief workers’ dedication and commitment to serving humanity are observed on World Humanitarian Day on August 19.

HISTORY OF WORLD HUMANITARIAN DAY

World Humanitarian Day is more than a day that recognizes humanitarian workers who dedicate their lives to work for humanitarian causes. It is a day to remind us that these people make our lives easier and safer and recognize the efforts of aid workers who put their lives on the line to help victims in times of global crisis.

The holiday comes as the UN General Assembly commemorates the 2003 bombing of the UN headquarters in Baghdad that killed 22 UN aid workers, including Sergio Vieira de Mello. Sergio was born and raised in Brazil and worked a day in and day out. The night has brought relief to help victims of armed conflict for three decades and to ensure that their plight is heard worldwide.

He worked tirelessly to put together a draft for World Humanitarian Day. Raising awareness was an essential aspect of Sergio’s campaign, trying its best to ensure that first-world countries and people living in conflict-free areas would gain a different perspective on war-torn areas, to show that it has more than just political conflict and the Death of warriors. In a way, Sergio tried to bring a more humane perspective to watching the wars, focusing on the lives of innocent people who struggled to survive and fell into conflicts of which he had no desire to be a part.

In the aftermath of this tragic event, the Sergio Vieira Mello Foundation and De Mello’s family have worked closely with ambassadors from France, Switzerland, Japan and Brazil at both the Geneva and New York tables, managing the draft to dedicate a special day through the General Assembly. In 2009, the UN General Assembly officially declared the first World Humanitarian Day. It honors courageous relief workers like Sergio who selflessly serve every day to make the world a better place for the disadvantaged and for those whose homes and livelihoods are threatened by war. In 2019, at least 483 relief workers were abducted, attacked or killed, and the situation was not good in 2020 during the Covid-19 epidemic.

Every year, the United Nations celebrates World Humanitarian Day with a theme. The theme brings together people across the humanitarian ecosystem and raises awareness for the survival, well-being, and dignity of people affected by the crisis and for the safety of humanitarian workers.

One of the themes of World Humanitarian Day was ‘Human Race’. The theme was aimed at highlighting issues related to the urgency of global climate change. It also highlights the immediate consequences of climate risks to the world’s most at-risk people and raises awareness of their well-being.
